Workshop Title: It Is Worth Reading
Target Professionals: English Language; Reading or Literacy teachers, Librarians, Curriculum Coordinators and Head of the English Departments.
Time: 6 Hours session from 9:00am-3:00pm
Abstract:
“One who does not read has no advantage over the one who can not read”
(Mark Twain)
In ESL (English as a Second Language) and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) situations, children who read English well do better in other subjects and in all aspects of schooling and beyond. As the world becomes more complex, it is crucial being an informed citizen so reading is increasingly important for children trying to find their place in it.
“It’s Worth
Reading” is a workshop aimed at helping teachers to support students
engaging them in activities making reading and writing skills and make it
an interesting interactive experience. This workshop is designed to help reading teachers
or
School Librarians to increase the reading habits among students. The
presenter will share some activities that can be used to make book reading an
exciting and meaningful activity and can help students develop their writing
skills by writing journals, book reviews and about the themes, characters etc. of the books
they read.
iEARN Pakistan has compiled a resource pack containing valuable guidelines and teaching resources that will help teachers initiate and implement an active reading program for all grades. The participants will be engaged in the hands on activities leading to discussions on the suitability and practicality of these activities in their contexts. They will also be asked to share their experiences of teaching reading and writing at different levels and age groups. All participants will get a personal copy of this resource pack for use in their own schools.
