My school was so excited to celebrate Global Youth Day initiated by i-EARN.It all started one fine morning we were invited by CARDINAL SCHOOL to participate in IEARN's Youth Volunteering and Community Service Program.We were asked to select one topic for community service the children are going to participate in and give their best to the community to make them responsible citizens.This was not to gain credits in academics but to inculcate the spirit of good will in them and tell them the importance of value the human being.
SO, children from three clsses were selected and they were 14 in all .They selected ENVIORNMENTAL AWARENESS so that they give information to the area adjacent to the school.

First of all they made a questionare as to know if people knew about the hazardous effects of pollution .
Then they made a list of suggestions what they can do for minimizing pollution .
Their slogan was:
REUSE
RECYCLE
CONSERVATION
mind you they did all this on their own and did a lot of research work in the preparation of questionaire and the suggestions.
The questionaire is as follows :
Do you know about pollution?
Have u ever heard about noise,water ,land and air pollution?
Do you u have a garden at home ? Do you know about the importance of plants in your lives?
Are you maintainting your vechiles properly?
Do you know about recycling ?
What are the things u can recycle at home?
Do you know about the chemicals and the bad effect it has on the enviornment?

 
 

Do u use plastic bags or cloth bags for going for shopping?
Hoe do u dispose off ur garbage?
Should we use both sides of the paper?
How air pollution damages Ozone layer?
Are u making any efforts for the cleaniness of ur surroundings?
The following are the sugesstions they gave to the people:
SAVE WATER:
Turn off the water while you brush ur teeth.
Take shorter showers or fill the tub with less water?
AIR:
Ride ur bike or walk rather than asking for a ride in car?
NOISE:
Listen to music with low volume .
ENERGY SAVING :
Open refrigerator only when it is necessary and close it quickly.
Switch to energy saving flourescent light bulbs and try to use maximum daylight .
REUSE:
Start recyling at home.
Buy recycled containers and paper product.
Take your own bags to the store with you to use again and especially use paper bags or cloth bags.
Use both sides of the paper .

On saturday all 14 students were called to schools.Area selected for the whole survey was WALTON RAILWAY officers colony .
First the groups worked together and did a SCAVENGER HUNT,in which children collected dry garbage aroundthe school and area close to the school.They had cloth and paper bags and with the help of tong and gloves filled their bags .
Several photographs were taken.The most shocking thing was people knew that Walton Community Welfare Society Collect garbage ,but it was surprising to hear that garbage is dumped across railway tracks after that no one knows what becomes of it .Some people burn garbage near their houses, parks,shops or any place they feel convenient to dispose off the stuff..All this stuff was recorded by the students.
CONCLUSION:
They finally concluded that most of the people knew about pollution but were not aware of the adverse effects chemicals and plastics have on land .
They didnt know about biodegratibility and they were briefed by our students.Our students then came up with an analytical report and presentation that they delivered at Global Youth Service Day Event held in Lahore on 18th April'2005.These students were channelised and motivated to take up this activity by their teachers namely Nighat Afza, Talha Zaahra, Shumaila and Zeehan.
