                                Pre-Departure Orientation

                        English Language Proficiency and Study Skills Program


 

Dates:                  June 15 – 30, 2003       (14 days, Monday through Saturday)

Timings:                09:00 am to 01:00 pm   (Four hours a day, total 56 hours)

                        Session One:     09:00 am to 10:50 am

                        Session Two:    11:05 am to 01:00 pm

Venue:                  Al-Murtaza School, Boys’ section

 Faciliator:           Sobia Alam and Afshan Haneef Khan

Focus:

Listening: Toefl exercises, questions based on talk shows/interviews recording, cloze exercises, news exercises                                                                         (10 hours)

Important Areas: intonation, Received Pronunciation (RP), dialects, pronunciation differences in different states/areas

 

Speaking: pair and group discussions, role-plays, individual and group presentations, interviews, talk shows                                                                                        (15 hours)

Important areas: functions, tone, expressions, body language (facial expressions and gestures), standard and non-standard speech, colloquial language, slang

 

Reading: different types of texts, fiction, non-fiction, newspapers, magazines, journals, academic reading, (different types of paragraphs, topic sentence, supporting details etc.), reading speed, reading poems and plays                                                          (10 hours)

Writing: free writing, different types of writing (explanatory, descriptive, narrative, reflective etc.) writing diaries and log journals, writing reflections

Academic Writing: writing essays, poems, term papers, repot, research papers, compiling and editing the texts                                                                                     (15 hours)

Other Skills:

Doing research, making presentations, using libraries (ISBN, Devi’s decimal numbers etc.) plagiarism, referencing, and project based learning.
